Vitaphone war ein in fast 2.000 Kurzfilmen von Warner Bros. Entertainment benutzter Tonfilmprozess. Die Eigenschaften waren: Bildaufnahme mit klassischer Kamera, wie Bell & Howell Standard samt Elektromotor, Tonaufnahme auf Wachsplatte. Die Bildfrequenz beträgt 22 Bilder in der Sekunde. Bei der Wiedergabe werden je ein klassischer Projektor und ein mechanisch angetriebener Plattenspieler starr miteinander gekoppelt, wobei die Schallplatten von 17 Zoll Durchmesser (rund 43 cm) mit 33/45 Umdrehungen in der Minute von innen nach außen abgetastet werden. Je ein Filmakt von maximal 1000 Fuß Länge (rund 300 m) läuft synchron mit der zugehörigen Platte. Die Laufzeit von Akt und Platte beträgt im Mittel 12 Minuten. Die Filmplatten sind nur einseitig bespielt und tragen einen eingepressten Pfeil beim Rillenanfang. Die Filmvorführer können die Tonnadel exakt auf Pfeilspitze auflegen, während die Filmkopie ein Startbild einkopiert hat, das vor das Bildfenster zu stehen kommt.

Ich habe einmal einen Artikel über diese Platten gelesen, wo die Zahl 20 als Maximum für das Abspielen genannt wird. Auch besitze ich ein paar wenige Platten, die intentionell zerstört worden sind. Sie wurden sternförmig zerkratzt. Die Zahlen am Rand sollten bei jeder Vorführung durchgestrichen werden. Die Artiphon-Platten geben zwar 36 Zahlen an, möglicherweise hat man da also sogar mit maximal 36 maligem Abspielen gereechnet (oder das zumindest theoretisch in Aussicht gestellt). Wie Sie sehen, ist Ihre Platte nie gespielt worden. Der Zustand ist praktisch neuwertig und Markierungen an den Zahlen gibt es auch keine. Das ist erstaunlich, weil ich weiss, dass von vielen Filmen gar keine Platten mehr existieren (oder zumindest in keinem Archiv bekannt sind). Auch die rund 40 derartigen Platten in meiner Sammlung sind keinem Archiv bekannt. Ich habe diese vor vielen Jahren fast alle zusammen erworben beim Ankauf einer sehr interessanten Zeitgeschichtsssammlung. Zwei weitere - wohl komplette Sets - hat mir ein Schweizer Antiquitätenhändler vor rund 20 Jahren verkauft. Ein drittes Mal bin ich auf eine solche Platte noch nicht gestossen.
