RUSSIAN MASTER SINGERS
Under the Direction of T. ZARKEVICH
on STANDARD RECORDS

Russian choral singing express fascinating depth and tremendous qualities of the Russian imagination. The earliest Russian melodies date back probably to the 5th or 6th century. The first source of inspiration of the ancient Slavs was mythology. Eventually, songs were composed about rivers, forests, meadows, and all Nature; some songs were in jest, others in serious vein. Included in the folk music are the famous Russian Gypsy songs (which are no Slavic origin). These were imported about three or four centuries ago into Russia, probably from India, by Bohemian nomads. Gypsy choirs first made their appearance in Moscow at the beginning of the 19th century and gradually became a part of the Russian folk music.

The songs contained in this record album are presented in an authentically Russian fashion by the RUSSIAN MASTER SINGERS. Mr. Zarkevich, organizer and director of the group, was born in Russia. Educated to be a lawyer, he preferred to follow his artistic inclinations and became a musician. From 1926 through 1933, he was musical director for the nationally famous Eva La Gallienne’s Civic Repertory Theater.

Each singer in the Russian Master Singers group is an accomplished soloist, with a background of a multitude of public appearance in most European countries.

Unaccompanied choral music is typically Russian and reflects the fullest depth and power or Russia itself. As the melody of each song unfolds, the impressive mastery of Mr. Zarkevich’s group will draw unrestrained admiration from each person listening to the STANDARD RECORDS.
