Was “Orpheon Record” a piratical label ?
The simple answer on this question is “Yes, it was”. The proof of this statement is a vast number of copied records, the label scans of some of them can be found on our site. Unfortunately, they were uploaded without sound files, so direct comparison is impossible at the moment.

However, if formulate question in different way: “Were all Orpheon records piratical ones?” the answer will be “No”. The point is that when in 1910 the State Duma began working on “Copyright Law ”, the owner of “Orpheon Record” Mr. D.A.Finkelstain decided to invest into producing own original recordings. The most known of them are record of A.D.Vyaltseva some of them are presented on our website. Most likely, the two records of A.I.Surin-Arsikov are also original recordings. BTW, later in 1911, the “Orpheon Company” was reorganized into “Russian Stockholders Company of Grammophone” (RAOG) and many original recordings had been reissued on RAOG label, though the "Orpheon Company" announcements for obvious reasons remained intact.
