Mattinata
is the original title. This song was commissioned from Leoncavallo by the Gramophone Company around 1904.

Lots of melodies first written by classical composers were written again by popular song writers.
The song was composed again in 1949, this time by Genaro and Skylar.
It was the first big hit record for young Vic Damone on Mercury label in 1949.
I have a version by Victor Silvester and his ballroom orchestra, Columbia FB 3530, CA 21232-1.
The label contains the following information
You're Breaking My Heart
With acknowledgement to the owners of the copyright in "Tis the Day"
(Genaro-Skylar)

I used to have the sheet music with the Gramophone Co details on it. 'Tis the Day was the original English title. In 1904 Caruso recorded it for red label, and for the British market John Harrison and others recorded the English version on black label. I looked through Kelly for any Gram. Co in other languages around 1904, but can't find any.
